Up to 4 million patients in Russia alone are currently suffering from severe speech and motor function disorders and are therefore doomed to lack of full communication.

The lack of social and rehabilitation activities and the final transition to a system of dependent life support leads to the emergence of irreversible mental, physical and social changes.
NeuroChat will help people with physical limitations, who had a trauma or a stroke, to communicate with other people again. They will have the opportunity not only to spend time for entertainment, but also be able to engage in public life and become more independent.

NeuroChat will increase the number of people returning to work by 3-5 times and decrease the disability rate to the level of countries in Western Europe.

About project
What is NeuroChat?

NeuroChat is Hardware and software system includes Neuroheadset “Garant-EEG” and special user interface "ErgoStim", implemented on the user's computer. The headset registers the patient's neurophysiological parameters and transforms patient’s mental effort into specific commands for the computer keyboard or other actuating devices.

The mental symbol transformed into real set of these symbols on the screen. The person letter by letter is able to type text without using voice and movements. The special user interface allows to accelerate the process of intelligent input and make online translation into the language of the interlocutor. So, the social network NeuroChat will not have language barriers and will become available all over the world.
How does it works?

А comfortable headset designed for long wearing is put on the patient's head. It registers the EEG and transmits data to the computer via Bluetooth. The patient "presses" on the desired symbol on the screen of the computer, focusing on his intention. The algorithm for determining mental commands has been developed for taking into account possible low characteristics of the user's attention, motivational and emotional attitudes and increased mental fatigue.

The technology works with the reliability of successful attempts “to click” on equal to 95% on average for ordinary patients. The time for execution of the mental choice depends on the number of objects on the screen (for 12 objects it is 2-3 seconds). NeuroChat allows not only to type symbols and change social network settings in different modes, but also to manage a set of bedside hospital equipment (communication panels with medical personnel, manipulators, household appliances, bed drives), as well as mobile presence robots and remote agents.
Who is the user?

For people with severe speech and movement disorders, for their relatives, medical staff and for everyone who wants to participate, contribute and communicate.

The main mission of our project is giving the opportunity for people suffering from severe speech disorders and motor disorders to return, if not into a full life, at least into a significant part of it. When these people have the opportunity to communicate and to interact with the world around, they no longer will cease to be doomed to loneliness. They will be able to feel themselves as a part of the big world around again, will be able to develop together with it and open new borders.

The first presentation of the neuroheadset with experiment that includes NeuroChat conversation between two patients located in different hospital wards will be held in December 2016.

The first communication of post-stroke patients will take place between clinics in Moscow and Los Angeles.

In 2018, NeuroChat will be presented at international exhibition of medical equipment in Düsseldorf MEDICA 2018.

NeuroChat is a multidisciplinary project that combines the achievements of Russian scientists in the field of neurophysiology and neuroinformatics. Different specialists like neurophysiologists, psychologists, physicians, engineers, programmers and mathematicians are working on the project.
